The end of the year is a time to look back on one’s accomplishments in the past twelve months, so that we can get ready to face the next twelve. In the age of analytics, it’s easy to get tied up in what was most popular, most commented, or most clicked. And while those are all important metrics to watch, I feel that during this time of reflection, it’s important to dig a little deeper.

Here at REALTOR® Magazine, we’ve been talking over the past week or two about the stories that we felt particularly proud of, regardless of how popular they were. Here’s a couple of our favorites and some thoughts from staff about why they’re worth a second look.

Editor and Managing Director Wendy Cole says “Behind a Smooth Transition” is a smart read because the particular skills it takes to guide clients who are buying and selling at the same time addresses a consumer struggle that a savvy practitioner should always keep in mind: “This story may have flown a bit under the radar but has deeply important insights about the common and difficult problem of working with clients who are simultaneously handling a sale and a purchase.”

Erica Christoffer, who produces and edits content for the new Broker to Broker initiative, has been getting to know REALTORS® who manage brokerages all around the country, and wants to make sure you didn’t miss this profile about one San Diego-based broker: “Richard Montano, motivated by his years as a homeless youth, is now creating change in the lives of his clients and in the community.” She also suggests brokers take a look at this series designed to reduce risks associated with technology: “Cybercrimes are a growing concern in the real estate industry. Brokers looking to mitigate risk and protect data should take another look at our three-part series published in August. It’s packed with information about the biggest threats to brokerages and tips on what to do if you’re hacked.”

Graham Wood wrote “The Friends and Family Conundrum” about real estate practitioners who have worked on deals with those who are close to them—to both positive and negative ends. He says this issue will always crop up in the industry, but how it might pan out for each party is anyone’s guess: “A lot of professionals rely on friends and family members as clients, and sometimes navigating those personal and business ties is tricky.”

I couldn’t decide between two stories from 2015 that I thought were worth a second look at year’s end. The first was an online companion piece to a feature I wrote for the magazine about the Internet of Things. While the print piece got a lot of attention, the online one (which was about how real estate associations, MLSs, and others could use the Internet of Things to improve business for members) might in the end have a more direct impact on the industry. Also, I thought the information in this piece about repurposing vintage industrial buildings will be important to the future, as real estate pros are increasingly involved in the revitalization of once-neglected city and town centers.
